Autumn is a lovely time to visit the Mournes. The leaves are changing, the hills are looking their best and there are plenty of crisp days for getting out and exploring.
There is plenty to do locally too for cost Autumn vibes:
- Alpaca walks at Cranfield – enjoy a walk along the coast with some very friendly four-legged company.
- Murlough Beach & Nature Reserve – a beautiful spot for a walk, with the Mournes right behind you.
- Kodak Corner, Rostrevor – one of the best-known viewpoints in the area, with lovely views over Carlingford Lough.
- Horse and carriage rides – take a more leisurely look at the countryside around the Longstone area.
- Seaweed baths in Newcastle – relax in a traditional hot seaweed bath after a day exploring.
- Local food – Newcastle, Kilkeel, Rostrevor and the surrounding villages have plenty of good cafés, restaurants and pubs to choose from.
- Walk the Mournes – from an easy woodland stroll to a full mountain hike, there’s something for every level.
- Kilbroney Park – explore the forest trails, enjoy the views and visit the famous Cloughmore Stone.
- Tollymore Forest Park – wander through the woodland trails, cross the old stone bridges and enjoy some of the best views of the Mourne Mountains. It’s a great spot for a longer autumn walk, with plenty to see along the way.
- Castlewellan Forest Park – explore the forest trails, lakeside walks and beautiful gardens, with Castlewellan Castle overlooking the park. The Peace Maze is also worth a visit, and there are plenty of walking routes to choose from.
You can spend the day walking, exploring the coast or simply taking in the scenery before returning to the Lodge for a good meal and a relaxing evening.
